I recently went to a meeting with a group in a larger city and they were talking about the lack of self-awareness that so many people have. We are all so busy with school, work, and the responsibilities of daily life that we don’t take the time to notice other things.
And it’s not too hard to get people to notice you when you are busy doing something else. Especially if you are busy taking care of yourself and your business.
That’s why I love this quote: “When you can do something and not be aware of it, you are the master of your own fate.” Or as another saying goes: “You can have a good time anywhere, but you can’t be aware of it.
Not to say that we have all the time in the world, but we all have the time in the world to do a little bit of self-awareness. Take a minute to look at your body, your face, and your surroundings.
A lot of people like to put it this way, but it’s a little more complex than that. At some point in your life you have to become aware that you are not the only one who is doing or thinking something. You don’t have to just be aware of the fact that you are thinking about something. You have to be aware of the fact that you are not the only one who is actually doing it.
This is kind of hard to explain in just a few sentences, so I’ll give it another shot. When you look at your body, your face, and your surroundings, you are all aware that you are all doing the same thing. That you are all really, really, really tired. That your hands are not really working right and you are really, really, really thirsty. That your heart is not really beating right and your eyesight is not really working right.
The only way you can truly be sure that you are really tired is to look at yourself. You know that each and every one of you has the same exact physical and mental state. You know that you are all tired because you are all so tired. It’s like when you say you’re really, really, really tired, but really, really, really, really want to go out and get a drink. Most people don’t say that.
We all feel tired. And a lot of that is physical. So, we should all probably drink some water. Even if it is just a sip, that is still better than nothing.
I know. So, if you feel like you have no energy, you should go to bed. This is true for everyone. Sometimes you just need to take a break from work, or just take a walk in your yard. Maybe sit in a hammock in your patio.
There will be a lot of time spent talking about this over the next month, but I hope you can get the idea. I have spent most of my career in the healthcare industry where there is this constant push to get patients into rehab and into active treatment. But there is a big catch. There is no cure for addiction. It is a disease that has been around for ages, and it is inarguably a disease that can and will kill.
